Darwin’s female correspondents give us a glimpse of just how many Victorian women were involved in scientific projects. They may have seen themselves as enthusiastic amateurs but the letters show that they carried out valuable observations and experiments in their own right. Several of the correspondents were also concerned with improving women’s access to education and were involved in women’s suffrage campaigns. The Darwin Project’s Education Officer is currently working with schools to explore the opportunities for learning more about these women’s lives.
